Jean Uwamahoro (PhD) obtained a BSc. Degree in Physics and Chemistry with Education in 2004 from the former Kigali Institute of Education (KIE), now University of Rwanda, College of Education (UR-CE), a BSc honors degree in Astrophysics and Space Science from the University of Cape Town, 2006 ; a MSc (2009) and PhD (2012) in Space Physics from Rhodes University, South Africa. He have been a UR academic staff and researcher since 2005 and currently has the rank of Professor of Physics. Prof. Jean Uwamahoro also hold an administrative position as the Deputy Director of the African Centre of Excellence for Innovative Teaching and Learning Mathematics and Science (ACEITLMS), hosted by UR-CE.
His academic duties include teaching both undergraduate and Masters physics courses, and he is involved in research and supervision of postgraduate students at both Masters and PhD levels. Since June 2019, He is a member of the Rwanda Academy of Science (RAS). In 2005, he was awarded a scholarship of the South African National Astrophysics and Space Science Program (NASSP) with which he completed all his postgraduate studies. In 2014, He won the CV Ramann fellowship for African Researchers. In the same year 2014, he won the Post Doctoral Research Grant, session 2014/2015 granted by the University of Rwanda-Sweden program.
Prof. Jean Uwamahoro is very actively involved in Space Physics and STEM education research. During recent past years, his research work focused on the modeling and predicting the Solar-Terrestrial Interaction physical phenomena, known as Space Weather. Prof. Jean Uwamahoro has initiated and established research collaboration and networking with regional and international research institutions including the NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center (NASA-GSFC), Maryland, USA, the South African National Space Agency (SANSA), the International Center for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy ; the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), the Homi Bhaba Centre for Science Education (HNCSE), Mumbai, India and the Khoury College of Computer Science, Northeastern University, Boston, USA. Prof. Jean was the UR staff main organizer and coordinator of two international scientific activities conferences which took place in Rwanda namely : The African School of Space Science, July 2014 and, the African School on Fundamental Physics and Application ASP2016), August 2016. Prof. Uwamahoro is also an honorary Lecturer at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST-Uganda. He is active member of different scientific organization at both regional and international levels.
His is a member of the Rwanda Academy of Science (RAS), member of the Rwanda Astrophysics, Space and Climate Science Research Group (RASCSRG), member of the African Geophysical Society (AGS) and member of the Variability of the Sun and its Terrestrial Impact (VarSITI). At the moment, he is also the country (Rwanda) coordinator of the International Space Weather (ISWI) initiative.
